Failing to make his name in his dull provincial hometown, he is taken up by a patroness, the captivating married woman Madame de Bargeton, and prepares to forge his way in the glamorous beau monde of Paris. It belongs to the “Scenes of Parisian Life” portion of Balzac’s The Human Comedy, and it is considered one of his greatest works. Essentially, this work is a collection of four separate volumes that are essentially loosely joined together through one central theme and figure, i.e. Originally published between 1838-1847 "A Harlot High and Low" continues the story of Lucien de Rubempre from Honore de Balzac's preceding novel "Lost Illusions."
